Every Tuesday, we feature photos from some of our favorite local photographers in a series we call Tuesday Takeover. We like to think of it as a chance for everyday Athenians to tell the story of what Athens looks like through their eyes. These are our Tuesday Takeover photos from March.
Hey everyone! My name is Alec Stanley. I am a musician and photographer who, after bouncing around from city to city on the east coast, bouncing to Seattle, WA for an internship at @Subpop, have finally found myself in Athens, GA where I currently reside. I play guitar in @mightytheband and I am one half of the wedding/portrait/family and engagement photography duo @lovestoriesbyhalieandalec. After moving around for years and years, Athens finally feels like a place I want to start my future. It feels like home. Athens has a way of slowly pushing roots deep into your being, all the while keeping you fulfilled and showing you a new part of itself each time you get out and explore. Athens to me is creative fuel. Being around so many articulate and talented folks really is what keeps me energized and productive. It also always means there is no shortage of inspiration for new work. I really enjoy taking several different styles of photographs, as well as playing several different styles of music. I feel my creative edge is sharpened the most when I am involved in several different creative outlets. I hope to showcase my varying array of photographic interests with the following posts. Photos and words by @alecstanley I. LOVE. MY. JOB. I love interacting with new couples every day. I love learning their love story, and I absolutely love the reaction we get when we truly capture the love and passion they have for each other without making them feel as if everything is posed. My absolute favorite thing about the work I do is delivering a product to a client that they will cherish for the rest of their lives, all while making them feel like the hottest pieces of ass anyone has ever seen.
Photos and words by @alecstanley I absolutely framing my subjects as perfectly as I can in my photographs. While it may be easy to take a nice photo of someone when you are holding a $3,000 camera attached to a $2,000 lens, I feel more proud of myself when I push myself to frame the subject more creatively. I absolutely love symmetry and lines (something I definitely picked up from @haliejohn) and it’s one thing that I am constantly working on improving.
Photos and words by @alecstanley My absolute favorite thing about taking photographs is trying to capture light and using light to convey emotion. If you truly understand how light interacts with your lens, you can create any emotion you want to, even if your subject isn’t truly feeling that emotion. I try to relate everything visually creative that I do to something musical, seeing as that is what I have the most experience in. When you start to heavily consider the use of light in your photograph, you really are able to shape the emotion and mood of your work much more effectively, as you would with the tone, chord choice, and style of the instrumentation around any song you would write.
Photos and words by @jeff.crain Hello Athens! My name is Jeff Crain (@jeff.crain). I am 24 years old, and I grew up in Lilburn, GA. I picked up a film camera at a garage sale my junior year of college and didn’t look back. I’ve pursued a career in photography over the past couple of years by shooting everything from weddings and portraits to products and models for brands. I’ve developed a passion for working with brands I believe in and telling their story through photography. I made the move to Athens from Charleston at the beginning of the year to work full time as a photographer for @peachstatepride. I am incredibly blessed to work for a company that is built on the humility of our owners as well as a passion for home. A huge thanks goes to the incredibly kind people at @my_athens for having me stop in and share some shots with you guys. I hope you like my photos, and I really hope your Tuesday rules.
Photos and words by @jeff.crain Working with @peachstatepride is nothing short of a dream job for me, and it comes with some perks. This past week we got to have lunch with Mayor Nancy Denson, and I’m certain I could listen to her stories for hours and not be bored. This journalistic approach to photography is something that is new for me but a lot of fun. It’s easy to let a photo tell the story when the moment is completely candid and well framed.
Photos and words by @jeff.crain I’ve probably stopped to take his photo a dozen times. He usually comes right over and gives me his best Zoolander impression. Although I like to imagine he’s excited to see me and maybe I even named him (Kenneth), I have a feeling his eagerness to come over is from a place of defending what’s his rather than the desire to be friends.
Photos and words by @jeff.crain When it comes to photography, there’s nothing more fulfilling to me than shooting alone in harsh weather with harsh lighting and a lot of movement. I want my photos to accurately convey the mood, emotion and reality of what was captured. I think that the more substance to a photo the more accurate the perception of the moment, and to me, the interplay of lighting, weather and movement is what makes an image feel real. Shooting in these conditions is challenging, and I’ve come home plenty of times with nothing to really show for it, but I find a lot of peace being out there waiting for something like this to come.
Photos and words by @shayonkeating Hey My Athens! My name is Shayon Keating and I am a local photographer, artist, science major, and foodie. Athens to me is such an incredible city for the burgeoning artist and academic. The fact that so much creativity flows through this city really draws me to it. Everywhere you turn you have another example of how you can express yourself. You can create your own narrative and make your story your own, truly the possibilities for creating yourself and finding your own style is endless.
Photos and words by @shayonkeating You have walked by this drug sign multiple times and have barely ever paid attention to it. Taking a picture, editing it, cropping it, and making that picture truly your own creates your own personal style. Athens is all about taking the ordinary and making it extraordinarily your own, its about putting your own unique spin on the everyday.
Photos and words by @shayonkeating I just did a shoot @ekkosapparel a couple months ago and got access to a rooftop downtown. We rarely ever get shots like this in Athens since it’s so hard to find tall places to shoot cityscapes. Shooting a clothing line up here was incredible not only because of the location and the new angles that most people have never seen, but because I got to work with people that are passionate, people that are able to help others while still making their own creative mark on this city.
Photos and words by @shayonkeating I shoot for a lot of people, from doing graduations shoots, to fashion shows, to magazine cover shoots. However if one thing remains constant throughout all that I do, is that I have a definitive style. All the people I work with have their own definitive style and that what makes this city so great. People from all walks of life can come together and share their styles with each other to make something amazing. I shot for @lucieannreynolds and her concept Galxey clothing line out near the Chase Street Warehouse. Her own style of clothing and my own style of shooting collaborated to create some amazing pictures of her collection. Just goes to show that we all have a voice, but putting our voices together makes this city roar with our creativity.
Photos and words by @alexseibert13 Hey there, My Athens community! My name is Alex Seibert. I’m a 22-year-old film producer, photographer, and live music lover. It seems most people have a tough time find a career to pursue but since the day I discovered it’s possible to capture life’s fascinating moments through a camera, I have been positively, unequivocally hooked. At 16 I was profoundly blessed to score a film production internship and have spent the greater part of my days since then refining and evolving my craft. I made the move to Athens spontaneously a few years ago and fell in love with the town immediately. The raw talent and spirit of the community here helps keep me inspired to continually create and I wouldn’t trade the relationships built, rivalries forged, or countless life-changing moments experienced for anything.
Photos and words by @alexseibert13This is a spot many of you probably have already visited — The Tree (not pictured; sorry, tree) Room as part of the Chase Park Warehouse. Exploration is key to life in Athens but I believe revisiting familiar and intriguing places is equally important. Revisiting helps me re-center, self-evaluate and reflect. Focusing on the day-to-day life instead of the bigger picture is sometimes unavoidable, but the reflection helps remind me to keep focusing on growing. If you plant a seedling, with a little love and proper care, one day you’ll return to a fruitful tree. Pictured: Kayla Lord (@kaylal0rd)
Photos and words by @alexseibert13 Pursuing a career with art, whatever form that may take, is difficult in the beginning. Although I’m still in the rough phase, I’m glad for it because it adds that extra pressure to push myself creatively. Not only that, but it inspires local artists to help build each other up by exchanging talent and service instead of cold hard cash. Pictured is a good friend of mine, Ari (@arielevaaa), who let me drag her around downtown Athens to practice my portraiture with her, but in exchange I get to help advertise the fascinating work she and her co-workers do at @arborsalonandspa here in Athens. Let her use her creative sorcery on your hair — but act fast, she’s always booked!
Photos and words by @alexseibert13 My affinity for music is an equally crucial part of my being and although I can’t keep a beat or hit a note to save my life, I try to intertwine film and music as much as possible, making Athens the perfect residence. It doesn’t matter what genre, which venue, or the time of day — I live for shooting live music, whether that be film or photography. I’m pushing my limits to achieve my dream as soon as possible: shooting music videos for a living. Speaking of music videos, my friends @kicktherobot and I have something supermassive in the works to accompany their upcoming album, Black Magic Radio Static — Stay tuned and rock on, Athens!
