This Saturday, April 18th, Athens will host the 2nd annual Chick-fil-A Connect Half Marathon! Events will include a half marathon, Akins Ford Half Marathon Relay (5k, 6k & 10k), and 1-mile fun-run. There will also be a two day Fleet Feet Athens Health and Fitness Expo. Whether you’re dressed up as a cow and running for fun, or competing for the cash prize, this will be an event for the entire Athens community!
The event will be raising funds for the 82nd Habitat for Humanity home built in Athens. They have been able to serve the greater Athens community for 25 years and have helped over 78 families. Everyone will have the opportunity to help in making this home possible, in addition to a percentage of the proceeds going towards the home, at the Fleet Feet Expo, you will be able to write blessings and encouragement on a wall frame of the 82nd house.
In attendance will be a recent home recipient, Austin Deblaski, who has not only a passion for running, but also for the way Habitat benefits the community.
Austin grew up in Athens and is glad to still be living here.
“I love the weather the most. I am so biased about Georgia it’s funny. I love this state and city so much I can’t stop talking about it,” said Austin.
According to Austin, he got involved with Habitat after returning to Athens for a job in HVAC industry.
“The Habitat folks came to my house, interviewed me, and in a few short months I was approved. That was last May. Last summer we set the floor joists and subfloor and by December things started really ramping up into high gear. Progress has soared,” Austin said.
Austin and his eight year-old son will be moving into their completed home soon.
In addition to his involvement with Habitat, Austin’s love of running is also a huge motivator behind coming out to participate in the event.
“Running is the heartbeat to my life. I found out I loved it in 2011. I feel like God has crafted my body to run. It just feels natural,” Austin explained.
Come out and join Austin in helping to raise the funds to build a home and provide for another family here in Athens!
